The Development of Type 2 Diabetes Explained

The Diabetes Plate Method is a Helpful Tool for Anyone who Wants to Eat Better

Many individuals with diabetes find the meal-planning component of diabetes education confusing. The plate method individuals about the type and amount of foods they should consume at each meal: 1. Fill 1/2 of the plate with non-starchy vegetables. 2. Fill 1/4 of the plate with grains, starchy vegetables, or beans and lentils. 3. Fill 1/4 of the plate with Protein. Participants who correctly plan breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals with the plate method improved their intake of fruit and vegetables.

Why Unhealthy Snacks Contribute to Diabetes.

Snacks contribute considerably to total dietary intakes among adults. This study included over 23,000 participants and showed that snacks represent a meal’s worth of calories in most American’s daily diet. Results showed that adults with controlled type 2 diabetes tend to consume more vegetables and less fruit juice in snacks compared to patients with uncontrolled diabetes. The study emphasizes the importance of seriously considering snacking habits in people with diabetes.

Ultra-Processed Foods (UPFs) Cause Metabolic Disease

UPFs includes all foods and drinks made using intense physical or chemical processes. These contain cosmetic food additives and other industrial ingredients (eg, artificial flavours, hydrogenated oils, glucose/fructose corn syrup). These foods are generally convenient, affordable, highly palatable, and often intensively advertised. They are associated with the steady increase of T2D, obesity, altered lipids and cardiovascular disease.

Consumption of 100% Fruit Juice and Body Weight in Children and Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

This review includes more than 45,000 children and 250,000 adults and found a positive association between intake of 100% fruit juice and weight gain in children. These studies support guidance to limit consumption of fruit juice to prevent the intake of excess calories and weight gain in children.

The Importance of Our Gut (Microbiome) in Health and Disease.

The gut is responsible for breaking down food and absorbing nutrients. Not only does a healthy gut ensure efficient digestion and absorption of essential vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients; but importance of the gut-brain axis is an emerging area of great scientific investigation. Interestingly, the gut microbiota can influence neurotransmitter production, affecting mood mental health, and metabolic disorders.
